We use our smartphones for many things in our professional and private lives. Therefore, we should try to ensure they last as long as possible. Many take precautions like installing anti-virus software and closing background apps, but are these steps really necessary? Here are five things you’re doing wrong with your Android device.

1. Using task killers or manually closing applications
Many of us use task killers or close applications manually from the recent apps menu. But without realizing it that could be harming the performance of our device.

When we first open an app, part of its data is becomes stored in the RAM. This means that when you open the app a second time, it will load faster because of the existence of this previously cached data.

If you remove the app from the recent apps menu, or delete the cache, the data stored in the RAM is lost also. If you then wish to reopen it you have to start this process again.

Only close applications if you must, for instance, if they are draining a lot of battery or occupying too many resources while in the background.

2. Using more than one antivirus app
If you feel that you need an antivirus program on your Android device then you should bear in mind that they take up resources like RAM and battery: these are intensive applications that run in the background all the time. But having more than one doesn’t make you safer. If you decide to use an antivirus app then make sure you choose wisely among the many available and only use one at a time.

3. Ignoring software updates
The operating system of your smartphone needs to be updated periodically to repair deficiencies in security. As soon as you notice an update, accept it. You can even set up your Android device to update automatically. The security of your phone will thank you. It will perform better and be more efficient.

4. Downloading applications from unreliable sources
Android APK files can be manipulated to contain malicious software which can infect your device. Make sure all your downloads come from reliable sources such as the Google Play Store.

5. Not restarting your smartphone
There is a lot of controversy surrounding this topic. However, rebooting your device once a week is ‘healthy’. On the one hand, memory is saved and temporarily cached data is deleted because it is no longer needed. On the other hand, sometimes memory is blocked and that temporary data is not deleted, which can lead to slowdowns.

Edo: APC apologises to victims of primaries’ intrigues

The APC has apologised to all the party officials who were  suspended in the wake of alleged intrigues that preceded the last governorship primaries. The party listed leaders involved to include Barrister Gentleman Amegor – State Vice Chairman, Edo South Senatorial District, Chief Matthew Ehigie (a.k.a Tiger) – Chairman Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Mr. Isaac Ikhine – Chairman, Esan Central Ward 1 and some other ward Chairmen in Oredo and Egor Local Government Areas. A statement by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Comrade Godwin Erhahon in Benin yesterday said, “We confirm that all the accusations levied against them were concocted by paid agents whose greed and lust for power made to spite God to please mammon. “The case of Mr. Ikhine is most pathetic as he was victimized for attempting to sanction leaders who betrayed the party during the presidential and National Assembly elections “These men and women are now ashamed to confess their sins openly but going secretly behind to beg the victims of their perfidy to resume duties. “APC remains proud of the majority of officials in the State Executive Committee who shunned all pressures, lobbies, blackmails and intimidations to rubber-stamp the malicious suspensions.” Erhahon commended the youth of the Party who were sponsored to harm innocent leaders but refused to do so, adding that, “You all proved wiser and godlier than your masters whose consciences are always ready for sale.” “All our leaders are advised to note that any husband who favours unfaithful wife more than the faithful will realize his foolishness when he no longer has a wife in his harem. “Politics is not dirty; it is most of the players in Nigeria that are dirty. “We appeal to all those who were hurt in the pre-primary election intrigues to please forgive and forget and return on board to deliver APC against all odds in the September 10, governorship election”, he said.

Nigeria ranks 3rd in online mobile shopping

ABUJA—Nigerian is ranked third in mobile online shopping worldwide, a report by Paypal has said. PayPal is the most popular way Nigerians pay for cross-border online purchases and 55 percent of Nigerian cross-border shoppers have used the platform for purchases in the past 12 months. According to PayPal, the country’s consumers spent N128.1 billion in 2015 via online shopping, targeting N172 billion by the end of this year.

PayPal’s General Manager Africa and Israel, Efi Dahan, who commented on the shopping trend said:  “Nigerians are doing so wherever and whenever they want to, using their mobile devices as an essential shopping tool. “Nigerian online shoppers have realised that the world is their shopping mall when it comes to buying what they need and want. ‘’They are no longer limited to what they can buy domestically, and are confidently scouring the globe for great deals, more choice, high quality and premier brands,” According to the report, Nigeria is home to some of the keenest mobile shoppers on the African continent, and is also the third largest mobile commerce market in terms of incidence of mobile shoppers among the countries that participated in a recent research. With 72 percent of online consumers shopping on a smartphone in Nigeria, the country follows China (86 percent) and India (82 percent) in terms of incidence of shopping via smartphone. A large majority of consumers pick smartphones to shop online both when shopping cross-border and locally in Nigeria. In terms of the value of this spending, consumers estimate that mobile shopping accounts for 38 percent of their total online spend, and 36 percent of cross-border purchases. According to the forecasts, this trend is likely to continue. 

I’ll Rebuild Nigeria For Our Children, Grandchildren – Buhari

on Thursday, reaffirmed his intention to rebuild Nigeria, including the volatile Niger Delta region that have been marked by several acts of violence and instability.

Speaking at the reception of delegates of Niger Delta Dialogue led by the Amanyanabo of Twon Brass, Bayelsa state, Alfred Diette-Spiff, at the state house, Abuja, the President vowed that Nigeria would utilise her resources appropriately.

He noted that his administration was studying the gazette on Niger Delta amnesty programme used by the former administration of Umaru Yar’Adua.

“We intend to rebuild this country, so that our children and grandchildren will have a good place they can call their own.

A lot of damage has been done, so I want you to tell the people to be patient,” he said.‎

“When you get together with other leaders, please pacify the people. We will utilise the resources of Nigeria with integrity and rebuild the country.”

Speaking on the Niger Delta amnesty, the President said, “I want to get as much intelligence as possible on the situation in the Niger Delta.

I have encouraged law enforcement agencies to contact leaders like you in order to have enough information to deal with the issues once and for all.”

Buhari sympathised with investors who had borrowed money to invest in the Niger Delta region and have been unable to make profits from their investment due to militancy.

He further charged the group to appeal to the militants to embrace peace and allow government do its work.

Signs and Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is usually asymptomatic at diagnosis. Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and is caused by elevated blood glucose levels, decreased insulin production and/or insulin resistance. Most Type 2 diabetics do not have signs of the disease, but rather it is discovered on routine laboratory results. For example, an individual would have an elevated glucose result, and this would prompt further evaluation to determine if Type 2 diabetes was present.

Classic Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

Even though most individuals are asymptomatic at diagnosis, there are some classic symptoms to be aware of, and medical attention should be sought if any of these symptoms are occurring:

1) Increased urination (polyuria) occurs when blood glucose levels in the urine are greater than 180 mg/dL, which is the kidney’s glucose threshold. This excess of sugar in the urine (a condition known as glycosuria) can be assessed by taking a urinalysis.

2) The increased urine glucose causes increased urination through osmotic diuresis. Osmotic diuresis is increased urine amount due to certain substances being present in the filtering component of the kidney. When a substance, such as glucose, cannot be reabsorbed in the kidney, an increased amount of fluid is pulled into the kidney leading to increased urination.

3) The increased urination can lead to a state called hypovolemia, which is a low volume of fluid inside the body, otherwise known as dehydration.

4) When a person is dehydrated he has increased thirst. If an individual attempts to replenish his fluid loss with ingestion of fluids that have a high concentration of sugar (such as sodas), the situation is dramatically worsened, increasing the urination and fluid loss even further.

5) Nocturia, or increased urination at night, may also be present.

6) Blurred vision can occur due to the elevated glucose concentration in the blood.

7) Occasionally, weight loss will occur in some individuals, especially if they cannot produce much insulin. When the body does not have enough insulin to drive glucose into cells for energy, it will begin to break down fat and protein. This causes rapid weight loss, but it’s typically temporary. Weight gain will occur after the diabetes is properly treated.

‘I Believe We Can Qualify, We Have Assets To Make Nigeria Proud’- NFF President Amaju Pinnick

Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick has stated his belief that the Super Eagles can qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The Super Eagles have been paired in a tough World Cup qualifying group that includes Algeria, Zambia and Cameroon. Pinnick believes Nigeria has enough in her tanks to make it through the qualifying campaign.
The NFF President, who was in Ibadan to watch a 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) match between Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) and FC IfeanyiUbah Football Club said to journalists;
“Football has come of age. Peru beat Brazil in Copa America. But I think we have assets that can make the country proud and I believe we will qualify. We will ensure that we make the difference in all. I grew up here and I am a fan of 3SC. I have only come to greet my aunty in Ibadan,’’ he stated.
Pinnick said he was very glad to see football fans come out in their thousands to support 3SC.

FG to unveil plan for affordable housing Monday

The Federal Government will on Monday unveil its plans towards the provision of affordable houses for Nigerians in line with the electoral promises of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, will make the plan public on behalf of the government at the Affordable Housing Summit 2016 being put together by the ministry in partnership with German Development Cooperation.

A member of the summit’s Technical Working Group, Mrs. Eucharia Alozie, disclosed this to journalists in Abuja.

Alozie who is the ministry’s Head of Public Private Partnership Unit was joined at the briefing by the Principal Consultant of Value Chain Project Consultants Limited, Dr. Joshua Egbagbe and the Leader of the Value Chain Unit of GIZ, Mr. Christoph Pannhausen.

“The minister will  be unveiling the Federal Government housing plan to the public during the summit. We will also produce blueprint that will be implemented very soon,” she said.

She explained that the summit would serve as a platform where the public and private sectors would share ideas and proffer sustainable strategic framework for housing delivery in Nigeria.

She said the ministry would use the opportunity of the summit to identify the challenges facing the sector and proffer solutions.

According to her, the summit was different from an earlier one where a housing roadmap was launched.

Alozie assured Nigerians that the event would not be talk shop but more of action.

She said the summit would address the five pillars on which affordable housing stood.

The pillars, according to her, are land‎; incentive and concession; off-takers strategy; housing finance;  skill development and technology.

Also speaking, Pannhausen said the summit would come up with a blueprint that would be implemented in the subsequent months and years.

He said the affordable housing would be placed more on the door steps of the private sector ‎who understand the market and how to invest in it.

Many feared killed in Ogun as militants strike again

Many people were feared killed when militants swooped on Elepete and Igbo Olomu communities in Ogijo area of Ogun State on Thursday night.

The communities are not to be far from Imushin, a community where no fewer than 15 people were killed by militants on Friday last week.

In the latest attack, at Elepete and Igbo Olomu, a source within one of the communities, who spoke anonymously, said several of the victims were landlords.

Due to incessant armed robbery attacks in these areas, the landlords were said to have mobilised themselves, formed a vigilance group, and had made bonfires at strategic points and were on patrol when the militants swooped on them.

‎Mistaken identity

The militants, who were said to be returning around 11pm from the creeks where they had allegedly gone to perpetrate their illegal business, opened fire as they arrived at Elepete after they mistook the vigilance group, for law enforcement agents.

As they fled, the militants were said to have chased them, gunning more of them down.

Around noon on Friday, the source said 30 dead bodies had been accounted for from various points, and that many residents have fled the communities for safety.

“They came out from the creeks. The whole communities have already been deserted. We need the presence of the Nigerian Army, Air force and Navy to curtail the excesses of these militants,” the source said.

However, the police said only two persons were confirmed dead.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Police Command, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said only two people were killed by suspected militants who have been laying siege on the communities.

He said, “Two people have been confirmed dead. The militants came again and attack the community. We will only continue to work collectively with all relevant agencies to stop the attacks. They came yesterday (Thursday) and attacked and went back to the creeks.”

Adejobi added that the police would fish out the criminals.
