Full Text Of President Buhari’s Democracy Day Speech

President buhari’s democracy speech. may 29,2016.

My compatriots,
It is one year today since our administration came into office. It has been a year of triumph, consolidation, pains and achievements. By age, instinct and experience, my preference is to look forward, to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead and rededicate the administration to the task of fixing nigeria. But i believe we can also learn from the obstacles we have overcome and the progress we made thus far, to help strengthen the plans that we have in place to put nigeria back on the path of progress.
We affirm our belief in democracy as the form of government that best assures the active participation and actual benefit of the people. Despite the many years of hardship and disappointment the people of this nation have proved inherently good, industrious tolerant, patient and generous.
The past years have witnessed huge flows of oil revenues. From 2010 average oil prices were $100 per barrel. But economic and security conditions were deteriorating. We campaigned and won the election on the platform of restoring security, tackling corruption and restructuring the economy. On our arrival, the oil price had collapsed to as low as $30 per barrel and we found nothing had been kept for the rainy day. Oil prices have been declining since 2014 but due to the neglect of the past, the country was not equipped to halt the economy from declining.
The infrastructure, notably rail, power, roads were in a decrepit state. All the four refineries were in a state of disrepair, the pipelines and depots neglected.
Huge debts owed to contractors and suppliers had accumulated. Twenty-seven states could not pay salaries for months. In the north-east, boko haram had captured 14 local governments, driven the local authorities out, hoisted their flags. Elsewhere, insecurity was palpable; corruption and impunity were the order of the day. In short, we inherited a state near collapse.
On the economic front, all oil dependent countries, nigeria included, have been struggling since the drop in prices. Many oil rich states have had to take tough decisions similar to what we are doing. The world, nigeria included has been dealing with the effects of three significant and simultaneous global shocks starting in 2014:
a 70% drop in oil prices.
Global growth slowdown.
Normalization of monetary policy by the united states federal reserve.
Our problems as a government are like that of a farmer who in a good season harvests ten bags of produce. The proceeds enable him to get by for rest of the year. However, this year he could only manage 3 bags from his farm. He must now think of other ways to make ends meet.
From day one, we purposely set out to correct our condition, to change nigeria. We reinforced and galvanized our armed forces with new leadership and resources. We marshaled our neighbours in a joint task force to tackle and defeat boko haram. By the end of december 2015, all but pockets and remnants had been routed by our gallant armed forces. Our immediate focus is for a gradual and safe return of internally displaced persons in safety and dignity and for the resumption of normalcy in the lives of people living in these areas.
Efcc was given the freedom to pursue corrupt officials and the judiciary was alerted on what nigerians expect of them in the fight against corruption. On the economy, in particular foreign exchange and fuel shortages, our plan is to save foreign exchange by fast tracking repair of the refineries and producing most of our fuel requirements at home. And by growing more food in nigeria, mainly rice, wheat and sugar we will save billions of dollars in foreign exchange and drastically reduce our food import bill.
We resolved to keep the naira steady, as in the past, devaluation had done dreadful harm to the nigerian economy. Furthermore, i support the monetary authority’s decision to ensure alignment between monetary policy and fiscal policy. We shall keep a close look on how the recent measures affect the naira and the economy. But we cannot get away from the fact that a strong currency is predicated on a strong economy. And a strong economy pre-supposes an industrial productive base and a steady export market. The measures we must take, may lead to hardships. The problems nigerians have faced over the last year have been many and varied. But the real challenge for this government has been reconstructing the spine of the nigerian state. The last twelve months have been spent collaborating with all arms of government torevive our institutions so that they are more efficient and fit for purpose:
that means a bureaucracy better able to develop and deliver policy
that means an independent judiciary, above suspicion and able to defend citizen’s rights and dispense justice equitably.
That means a legislature that actually legislates effectively and
above all; that means political parties and politicians committed to serving the nigerian people rather than themselves.
These are the pillars of the state on which democracy can take root and thrive. But only if they are strong and incorruptible. Accordingly, we are working very hard to introduce some vital structural reforms in the way we conduct government business and lay a solid foundation on which we can build enduring change.
An important first step has been to get our housekeeping right. So we have reduced the extravagant spending of the past. We started boldly with the treasury single account, stopping the leakages in public expenditure.
We then identified forty-three thousand ghost workers through the integrated payroll and personal information system. That represents pay packets totaling n4.2 billion stolen every month. In addition, we will save twenty-three billion per annum from official travelling and sitting allowances alone.
Furthermore, the efficiency unit will cut costs and eliminate duplications in ministries and departments. Every little saving helps. The reduction in the number of ministries and work on restructuring and rationalization of the mdas is well underway. When this work is complete we will have a leaner, more efficient public service that is fit for the purpose of changing nigeria for the good and for good.
As well as making savings, we have changed the way public money is spent. In all my years as a public servant, i have never come across the practice of padding budgets. I am glad to tell you now we not only have a budget, but more importantly, we have a budget process that is more transparent, more inclusive and more closely tied to our development priorities than in the recent past. 30% of the expenditure in this budget is devoted to capital items. Furthermore, we are projecting non-oil revenues to surpass proceeds from oil. Some critics have described the budget exercise as clumsy. Perhaps. But it was an example of consensus building, which is integral to democratic government. In the end we resolved our differences.
We have, therefore, delivered significant milestones on security, corruption and the economy. In respect of the economy, i would like to directly address you on the very painful but inevitable decisions we had to make in the last few weeks specifically on the pump price of fuel and the more flexible exchange rate policy announced by the central bank. It is even more painful for me that a major producer of crude oil with four refineries that once exported refined products is today having to import all of its domestic needs. This is what corruption and mismanagement has done to us and that is why we must fight these ills.
As part of the foundation of the new economy we have had to reform how fuel prices had traditionally been fixed. This step was taken only after protracted consideration of its pros and cons. After comprehensive investigation my advisers and i concluded that the mechanism was unsustainable.
We are also engaged in making recoveries of stolen assets some of which are in different jurisdictions. The processes of recovery can be tedious and time consuming, but today i can confirm that thus far: significant amount of assets have been recovered. A considerable portion of these are at different stages of recovery. Full details of the status and categories of the assets will now be published by the ministry of information and updated periodically. When forfeiture formalities are completed these monies will be credited to the treasury and be openly and transparently used in funding developmental projects and the public will be informed.
On the niger delta, we are committed to implementing the united nations environment programme report and are advancing clean-up operations. I believe the way forward is to take a sustainable approach to address the issues that affect the delta communities. Re-engineering the amnesty programmes is an example of this. The recent spate of attacks by militants disrupting oil and power installations will not distract us from engaging leaders in the region in addressing niger delta problems. If the militants and vandals are testing our resolve, they are much mistaken. We shall apprehend the perpetrators and their sponsors and bring them to justice.
The policy measures and actions taken so far are not to be seen as some experiment in governance. We are fully aware that those vested interests who have held nigeria back for so long will not give up without a fight. They will sow divisions, sponsor vile press criticisms at home and abroad, incite the public in an effort to create chaos rather than relinquish the vice-like grip they have held on nigeria.
The economic misfortune we are experiencing in the shape of very low oil prices has provided us with an opportunity to restructure our economy and diversify. We are in the process of promoting agriculture, livestocks, exploiting our solid mineral resources and expanding our industrial and manufacturing base. That way, we will import less and make the social investments necessary to allow us to produce a large and skilled workforce.
Central bank of nigeria will offer more fiscal incentives for business that prove capable of manufacturing products that are internationally competitive. We remain committed to reforming the regulatory framework, for investors by improving the ease of doing business in nigeria.
Meanwhile, the first steps along the path of self-sufficiency in rice, wheat and sugar – big users of our scarce foreign exchange – have been taken. The labour intensive farming enterprise (life), will boost the economy and ensure inclusive growth in long neglected communities. Special intervention funds through the bank of agriculture will provide targeted support. Concerns remain about rising cost of foods such as maize, rice, millet, beans and gari. Farmers tell me that they are worried about the cost of fertilizers, pesticides and the absence of extension services. The federal and state governments are on the same page in tackling these hurdles in our efforts at increased food production and ultimately food security.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the increasing role that our women are playing in revitalizing the agricultural sector. Modern farming is still hard and heavy work and i salute our nigerian women in sharing this burden. In this respect i am very pleased to announce that the government will shortly be launching the national women’s empowerment fund, which i have approved to provide n1.6 billion in micro-finance loans to women across the nation to assist in rehabilitating the economies of rural communities, particularly those impacted by the insurgency and conflict.
With respect to solid minerals, the minister has produced a roadmap where we will work closely with the world bank and major international investors to ensure through best practices and due diligence that we choose the right partners. Illegal mining remains a problem and we have set up a special security team to protect our assets. Special measures will be in place to protect miners in their work environment.
For too long, ours has been a society that neglects the poor and victimizes the weak. A society that promotes profit and growth over development and freedom. A society that fails to recognize that, to quote the distinguished economist amartya sen “ poverty is not just lack of money. It is not having the capability to realize one’s full potential as a human being.”
So, today, i am happy to formally launch, by far the most ambitious social protection programme in our history. A programme that both seeks to start the process of lifting many from poverty, while at the same time creating the opportunity for people to fend for themselves. In this regard, five hundred billion naira has been appropriated in the 2016 budget for social intervention programmes in five key areas. We are committed to providing job creation opportunities for five hundred thousand teachers and one hundred thousand artisans across the nation. 5.5 million children are to be provided with nutritious meals through our school feeding programme to improve learning outcomes, as well as enrolment and completion rates. The conditional cash transfer scheme will provide financial support for up to 1 million vulnerable beneficiaries, and complement the enterprise programme – which will target up to 1 million market women; four hundred and sixty thousand artisans; and two hundred thousand agricultural workers, nationwide. Finally, through the education grant scheme, we will encourage students studying sciences, technology, engineering and maths, and lay a foundation for human capital development for the next generation
I would like to pay a special tribute to our gallant men and women of the armed forces who are in harm’s way so that the rest of us can live and go about our business in safety. Their work is almost done. The nation owes them a debt of gratitude.
Abroad, we want to assure our neighbours, friends and development partners that nigeria is firmly committed to democratic principles. We are ready partners in combating terrorism, cyber crimes, control of communicable diseases and protection of the environment. Following on the paris agreement, cop 21, we are fully committed to halting and reversing desertification. Elsewhere, we will intensify efforts to tackle erosion, ocean surge, flooding and oil spillage which i referred to earlier by implementing the united nations environment programme (unep) report.
We are grateful to the international community notably france, the us, uk and china for their quick response in helping to tackle the recent ebola outbreak in our sub-region. We also acknowledge the humanity shown by the italian and german governments in the treatment of boat people, many fleeing from our sub-region because of lack of economic opportunity. We thank all our partners especially several countries in the eu.
We appreciate the valuable work that the un agencies, particularly unicef, icrc, the world food program have been doing. We must also appreciate the world bank, the gates foundation, the global fund and educate a child of qatar are for the excellent work in our health, education and other sectors.
Fellow citizens let me end on a happy note. To the delight of all, two of the abducted chibok girls have regained their freedom. During the last one year, not a single day passed without my agonizing about these girls. Our efforts have centred around negotiations to free them safely from their, mindless, captors. We are still pursuing that course. Their safety is of paramount concern to me and i am sure to most nigerians. I am very worried about the conditions those still captured might be in. Today i re-affirm our commitment to rescuing our girls. We will never stop until we bring them home safely. As i said before, no girl should be put through the brutality of forced marriage and every nigerian girl has the right to an education and a life choice.
I thank you and appeal to you to continue supporting the government’s efforts to fix nigeria.

Health Benefits Of Raw Honey

  • Honey has been valued as a natural sweetener long before sugar became widely available, honey naturally contains nutrients and enzymes that have a variety of health benefits and medical uses. Raw honey is honey (nectar from flowers) that is pure, unheated, unpasteurized and unprocessed.
This is perhaps one of the most important characteristics and health benefits of the final product, as it preserves all the natural vitamins, enzymes, phytonutrients and other nutritional elements. True raw honey is quite different from processed, commercial honey for these main reasons.

Antibacterial and antifungal properties: Raw honey can kill unwanted bacteria and fungus. It naturally contains hydrogen peroxide, an antiseptic. The effectiveness of honey as an antibacterial or antifungal depends on the type of honey.

Honey Improves Your Scalp: Honey diluted with a bit of warm water was shown to significantly improve seborrheic dermatitis, which is a scalp condition that causes dandruff and itching.

Help for digestive issues: Honey is sometimes used to treat digestive issues such as diarrhea, though there isn’t much research to show that it works.
However, it’s proven to be effective as a treatment for  a common cause of peptic ulcers. (Peptic ulcers occur in the stomach or digestive system.) Taking 1-2 teaspoons on an empty stomach is said to soothe pain and help with the healing process.

Heal wounds: Honey is also used in medical settings to treat wounds because it’s an effective germ killer. Researchers believe this is because it has additional antibacterial properties besides the natural hydrogen peroxide. Honey can boost healing time and reduce infections in wounds.images
prevent cancer and heart disease: Honey contains flavonoids, antioxidants which help reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease.
Helps improve skin: It’s anti-bacterial qualities are particularly useful for the skin and when used with the other ingredients, honey can be moisturizing and nourishing.
Helps regulate blood sugar: Even though honey contains simple sugars, it is not the same as white sugar or artificial sweeteners, it’s exact combination of fructose and glucose actually helps the body regulate blood sugar levels.

You can make a face pack by mixing 1 tbsp of plain yogurt, 2 tbsp of oatmeal powder and 1 tsp of fresh lemon juice. Apply this pack onto the affected skin and leave it for about half an hour. Apply any moisturizer, after rinsing it off with cold water. Repeat this every day for 1 – 2 months to get best results.

Lemon: Lemon, a citric fruit, acts as a natural bleaching agent. Applying lemon juice on the dark spots and affected areas is one of the best home remedies for treating dark spots on the face.
Onions and garlic juice mixture: Using onion and garlic juice mixture is an excellent remedy to remove dark spots. Regular application will help lighten the spots and gradually help fade them off completely. Take out the juice of onion and garlic, mix these two well together. Add three to four tablespoons of lemon juice to make a paste, scrub it on your skin and wash it off with warm water when it dries. If it becomes messy, use a clean cloth soaked in warm water to remove the mask. Follow this treatment once or twice a week.
Almonds: Take 8-10 almonds and soak them in milk overnight. Peel off the skin and grind the almonds in the morning, add one teaspoon sandalwood powder and half a teaspoon honey in it. Mix them to make a fine paste, apply it on your face. Leave it on for about 30 minutes and then wash it off.

For example, papaya contains papain, an enzyme that exfoliates the skin encouraging production of new, fresher-looking skin. There are two ways that you can use papaya. Apply the pulp of ripe papaya to the skin and leave it on for about 20 minutes; then rinse it off.

Another option is to grate green papaya and add lime juice to it. Apply this mixture to black spots and allow it to sit for 15 minutes before rinsing it off. You can also use papaya skin as an excellent scrub for knees and elbows.

My husband robs his manhood with black soap before making love with me,’’ wife tells Lagos court

`My husband robs his manhood with black soap before making love with me,’’ wife tells Lagos court
Lagos, Per Second News -- In spite of her husband’s fetish practices, a businesswoman, Ajoke Abiodun, has passionately pleaded with a Lagos court to save her 14-year-old marriage instead of quitting.

The mother of three made the plea to the court not to grant her husband's request to dissolve the marriage that she was ``still in love.’’
``My husband is fetish; he usually robs his manhood with black soap before making love with me.
``I have always denied him sex because of the black soap he robs and other rituals he performs at home and this is the cause our frequent fight,’’ 39-year-old Ajoke, told an Igando Customary Court.
She was responding to a suit filed by her husband, Dare Abiodun, seeking the dissolution of the union over threat to his life and his wife’s alleged infidelity. According to her, in 2009 her husband slaughtered a goat for rituals.
``My husband attempted to use me for rituals as he attempted to rob the blood of the goat on my body, but I was fast enough.
``Dare brought to the house some fetish materials like coloured water, black soup, different plant leaves and other items and  persuaded me to drink it.
``But l refused since I know that he is fetish.’’
She also accused her husband of infidelity, alleging he is having an affair with a woman called Abiola, who came to disrupt the peace in their matrimonial home.
Abiodun, 41, also a businessman, launched a counter-accusation against the wife, saying
``I caught my wife with a man in our matrimonial home.
``When I queried her, she could not give a satisfactory answer as to what the man was doing in our bedroom."
He, however, confirmed that his wife had always denied him sex.
``She denies me sex any time I wanted to make love with her. She is a street fighter.
``I have bailed my wife at different police stations more than five times for affray -- frequent fighting with neighbours.
Abiodun accused his wife of threatening his life, claiming that she had sent him out of their home at knifepoint.
His submission: ``I want the court to dissolve the marriage as I am no longer interested; my life is in danger.’’
In his ruling, the court’s president, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, after listening to their submissions, fixed May 18 for judgment.

They may seem acidic based on taste but in the process of being metabolized by the body, they actually alkalize our bodily fluids and tissues. Maintaining the health of the liver is also imperative to the body’s ability to digest and burn fat, since the liver is one of the organs responsible for these functions. Lemons are high in vitamin C and citric acid. 2016 budget faces cash flow emergencies, may lose N1.4trn

The 2016 national budget just signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari may have started suffering a major cash flow set back from oil revenue as prices shed $5 per barrel as at last weekend while output dropped further due to Chevron facility bombing just before the budget was signed, Friday.
File: Buhari during the 2016 budget presentation to the National Assembly.
The Federal Government had based the budgeted revenue on oil production of 2.2 million barrel per day but oil industry reports, last weekend, after the second attack on oil installations, indicated that output would be around 1.6 mbpd or even less. Also, the budgeted oil price benchmark of $38 per barrel came with expectation that in the event of production shortfall, which had been consistent since this year, a premium of at least 20 per cent on the price benchmark which gives about $45.6 per barrel, would make up for the losses arising from output shortfalls. But oil price receded to $41 per barrel, or less than 10 per cent premium on budgeted price benchmark as against $46.1 per barrel peak recorded in the previous week. With the twin developments in the oil sector, the Federal Government is now losing about $8 million per day on oil price reversal, while production slump has resulted in a revenue loss to the tune of about $22.8 million per day. The total loss from date to year end on annualized budgetary provisions would be $7.16 billion or about N1.4 trillion, if the oil price fails to rebound sometime down the year and production level remains depressed. Losses wipe out 80% of budgeted CAPEX The N1.4 trillion revenue shortfall would wipe out about 80 per cent of the total N1.8 trillion earmarked for capital expenditure, CAPEX, in the budget, thereby rendering the reflationary thrust of the budget ineffective from the on-set. On the possibility of oil price upwards swing, the International Monetary Fund, IMF, last week said the average price for the year would be $41, with occasional downward and upward swings, meaning that the losses to price reversal would likely remain. Also on the future of production level recovery, various factors that have combined to depress output to less than the budgeted 2.2 million barrel per day, such as joint venture hitches as well as militancy, appear to be on the increase rather than being eliminated. Latest data from April Monthly Oil Market Report, MOMR, of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, showed that Nigeria’s crude oil production fell by 67,000 bpd in March from 1.744mbpd to 1.677mbpd, with Nigerian industry experts saying that April did not do better, while last week’s attack on Chevron brought down output to about 1.637mbpd. With the defiant posturing of the militants and threats of further attacks, it appears the output challenges may even get worse, especially as the Nigerian security agencies appeared too weak to arrest the situation. Already, reports indicate that other major oil producers such as Shell and Mobil may have started plans to shut-in production locations in volatile areas, following the threats. Apparently aware of the implications of these sudden developments last weekend while signing the budget, President Buhari said: “We are working night and day to diversify the economy so that we never again have to rely on one commodity to survive as a country.”

Child rapist jailed for writing child-grooming ‘manual’

Jonathan Zovoe

A peadophile, Alan Holmes, 36, has been jailed for 12 years after writing a manual showing how to groom a child using the sex ordeal of one of his victims.

The manual included a number of graphic instructions and also urged readers to ‘have fun and be creative’, according to Metro.co.uk.

Added to the young girl’s humiliation, the court heard that Holmes added a four minute video recording of her performing a sex act.

Police also found tens of thousands of images and film clips of child porn, including dozens of the girl abused by Holmes, on his computer.

Apart from the images found, PowerPoint-style movie that was a ‘step-by-step guide on how to groom and abuse a girl’ was also discovered.

The prosecutor said, “It is clear that the intention of this item is not only the abuse of children, but the creation and sharing of images and movies of that abuse.”

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall was so saddened that he explained that the action of Holmes was utter evil.

He said, “It is beggars belief that a human being could write such utter evil filth – a lecture to another human being about how to proceed about the awful sexual abuse of a child.”

Holmes admitted a string of child sex offences including two charges of oral rape, sexual assault of a child, causing a child to engage in sexual activity, making and possessing indecent images and possession of extreme pornography.

He will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

ABUJA – Finally, President Mohammadu Buhari has assented to the 2016 Appropriation Bill, giving way for full implementation of the budget. The signing took place just a moment ago at the presidential Villa, Abuja. Recall that the budget was laid before a joint session of the National Assembly on December 22, 2015. Work on the document began shortly after the Christmas break upon the resumption of the National Assembly for legislative duties. But a plethora of arguments and counter-arguements later ensued between the presidency and the national assembly following the controversial “padding” of the budget against the wishes of President Buhari. The came after the national assembly had unanimously approved the budget estimates of N6.06 trillion from the initial N6.08 trillion and transmitted to the presidency with the highlight, but failed to attached the details. Reacting, the president declined to give his assent, insisting on seeing the details. But the details made available later proved to be incredibly padded, prompting the Executive arm to return the budget for a rework. This unfortunately had taken almost 5 months, causing untold hardship on citizenry. But apparently satisfied with the corrections made on the document, the president on Friday put ink on paper, signing the dotted lines. More details later

Your hair style may cause hair loss – Study

Jonathan Zovoe

Certain hair styles may cause hair loss a new research has suggested.

19 studies which were reviewed by a team of researchers from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore and published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, found a relationship between scalp-pulling hair styles and gradual hair loss (traction alopecia).

The research says it is common among African and African-American women. Their hairstyles cause damage to the hair follicle because of tension at the hair root.
It also determined that chemical straightening of hair increases the damage caused by these hairstyles. The hair begins to break because the shaft of the hair would have become weakened.
Extensions, especially those in which adhesive is applied directly to the scalp, can also damage hair, leading to hair loss.
The research also added that use of heat straighteners on the hair, such as blow drying and the use of flat irons, could also weaken hair, leading to thinning and balding.
A professor of dermatology at Hopkins, Dr. Crystal Aguh, in a university news release said some hair styles meant to boot our self confidence lead to hair loss and scalp damage.
Aguh said, “Hair is a cornerstone of self-esteem and identity for many people but ironically, some hair styles meant to improve our self-confidence actually lead to hair and scalp damage.”
The researchers advised that extensions should be removed after six to eight weeks and braided hairstyles should not last longer than two to three months.
However, Untreated hair was found to be better at sustaining damage done to it during styling.

I Caught My Wife In Bed With Her ‘Brother’, Hubby Tells Court.

Lagos –  A 40-year-old man, Mr Sunday Oladipupo, has asked an Orile Agege Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve his marriage with Bukola over alleged adulterous behaviour by his wife. ”
I caught my wife in bed with her supposed brother, I want a divorce, ” Oladipupo, a driver, told the court on Thursday. The complainant lives at 7, Nmbosi Avenue, AIT Road, Alakuko, a suburb of Lagos told the court. “I caught my wife red-handed with a man she introduced to me as her brother, they were both naked and in the act. “She pushed me to beating her because I always feel jealous anytime I see her with another man. “Before I kill her and myself, it is better we part ways,” he said. Oladipupo claimed that Bukola did not respect him and left home at will and returned when she liked. He said that his wife left home since September 2015 with his children, aged four and nine years. “She was pregnant when she left my house but the most painful part was that her man friend called me on phone and told me to ask my wife about the paternity of our two children,” he said. The complainant told the court that he was tired of the union and wanted a divorce. However, Bukola denied the allegation but supported the dissolution of the union. “I am not adulterous and I was not pregnant when I left his house in 2015. ” I left home because he beat me anyhow, I did not have peace of mind with him, I am tired of the marriage, I support the dissolution,” she said. The Court President, Dr Kayode Whenu, told the couple to maintain the peace and adjourned the matter to May 10 for further hearing. (NAN)

Man starved of sex since 2012 gets divorce

An Igando Customary Court in Lagos on Thursday dissolved an 11 -year-old marriage between Mr Azeez Ige and his wife, Bola, over alleged sex starvation. The court’s president, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, in his judgment, said the court was convinced that the estranged couple was tired of the union, as all efforts to reconcile them had failed. “Since both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage,
this court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage. “The marriage between Mr Azeez Ige and Mrs Bola Ige is hereby dissolved from today. “Both parties are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances and molestation.” Omilola ruled. Ige, a 53-year-old civil servant, had approached the court seeking to dissolve his marriage, on the grounds that the wife had starved him of sex since 2012. “My wife is starving me of sex, whenever I wanted to make love to her she always fights me and my body is not a stone nor stick.” he said. He also told the court that his wife was fetish, a drunk, and had once tried to strangle him, adding, “she held my neck and wanted to kill me but God saved me.”. According to him, Bola consumes excessive alcohol and misbehaves afterwards. The petitioner said that his wife had kept some strange materials like horns, calabash and other fetish items in his wardrobe. He added that the woman was in the habit of leaving her matrimonial home for up to a month without permission. “Whenever I question her she fights me. She always engages herself in a physical combat even with our son’s teachers when she goes there. “And she always fights me with knife, cutlass but will quickly rush to the police station to report and get me arrested.” he said. Bola, a 44-year old businesswoman, however, attributed her refusal to have sex with her husband to her fear of getting pregnant. “I denied my husband sex since 2012 because of my health condition. I gave birth to our only 10-year-old son through operation and I don’t want to experience such again.” Bola accused the husband of beating her frequently, a situation which made her to severally move out of their matrimonial home, to save her life.(NA

Bishop weds 109 couples

Most Rev. Mathew Audu, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Lafia, Nasarawa State, on Saturday in Masaka wedded 109 couples and urged in-laws not to interfere in their affairs.

Audu, who was on his third pastoral visit to St. Martin`s Catholic Church, Masaka, appealed to relatives of the new couples to allow them to build their marriages.

“As newly wedded couples, you must love each other just as Christ Jesus loved the church and died to set souls free.

“You must respect each other’s feelings; care for each other, share views and reason together in peace and unity.

“You must not allow a third party to come into your matter; always invite God to intervene in your case.

“Ensure that you are coordinated in all your dealings and make the word of God your standard, your pillar, your faith and your hope.

“If you can keep these entire commandments, your marriage will be perfect and other couples will want to copy from you,’’ he said.

The Bishop, who also confirmed 1,390 faithful, blessed 56 Eucharistic Ministers and 76 lectors, saying the blessing would strengthen their faith.

He said that the confirmation and the blessings the members received would energise them to evangelise to people and win more souls into the kingdom of God.

Audu said that confirmation in the Catholic Church was the sacrament which reaffirmed a person’s status in the church.

He advised the members who were confirmed to keep doctrines of the Catholic Church and ensure that they carried out responsibilities given to them diligently.

“The Catholic Church sees confirmation as a rite in which grace falls on the person confirmed as they announce their commitment to God and the Church,’’ he said.

Earlier, Rev. Fr. Jude Maigari, Parish Priest of the parish, said that the mass wedding was a culture imbibed by the church to enable couples with little finances wed in the church.

He encouraged the couples to heed the advice given by the bishop saying it would help them to live in peace and harmony.
